Bone Grafting

Commonly, after tooth loss and/or gum disease, there is significant loss of bone. Areas where this has occurred require bone grafting (augmentation) procedures in order to place dental implants which must be fully housed within bone. Often the bone grafting procedures are performed at the same time the implants are placed.

Sinus Lift Surgery

The maxillary sinus is an air filled cavity behind the cheek bone. Often, it is quite large which means that there is not enough bone height to place a dental implant since it will penetrate into the sinus. The sinus lining is gently elevated in the region of the intended implant and a bone graft material (usually from cow bone or a synthetic product) is placed between the sinus floor and the sinus lining. The implant will almost always be placed simultaneously to “tent” the sinus lining. Your own bone will then grow into the graft and surround the dental implant. Small sinus lifts do not cause long term damage to the sinuses. If the sinuses show signs of sinusitis before the surgery, you may be referred to an ear nose and throat surgeon for evaluation. Sinus lift surgery does carry a very small risk of bleeding and sinus infection immediately after the surgery.

Block Grafting

Block bone grafting is required to correct defects in bone and typically require approximately 4 months to allow for fusion with your existing bone. This type of graft may be necessary if you have experienced significant bone degeneration and need to augment your oral structure before dental implants can be placed.

There has been extensive scientific research and development in “bone from a bottle” that means that your own bone does not have to be used. At this stage however, when block grafting is required, predictable results are not yet possible. This means that bone needs to be harvested from other sites in your mouth or from your hip, to restore bone volume.
