Dental Implants

Dental implants provide a durable, long-term solution for missing teeth, restoring both function and aesthetics. Advances in implant technology - including digital planning, bone and soft tissue grafting, and surgical precision - enable us to offer highly customised and predictable treatment options. Whenever possible, implants are placed immediately following tooth extraction, reducing treatment time and costs. However, in cases requiring additional bone support, grafting may be necessary before implant placement to optimise outcomes.

Successful implant treatment is a collaborative process. The surgeon’s role is to support the prosthetic plan developed by your dentist, who designs and constructs the final crown, bridge, or denture. Proper implant positioning and angulation are essential for long-term functionality and aesthetics. At ESOMS, we utilise cutting-edge techniques to ensure a natural, cleansable, and durable outcome.

For most patients, standard titanium implants will achieve these goals. However, for individuals with significant bone loss or anatomical limitations, we offer advanced solutions such as Co-Axis implants, zygomatic implants, and subperiosteal implants. Our expertise in complex implant cases enables us to provide tailored treatment options that may not have been previously considered viable.

Aftercare
Aftercare

Comprehensive aftercare is essential for a successful outcome. Following implant placement, meticulous oral hygiene is paramount. We emphasise confident, thorough brushing around the implant to maintain healthy surrounding tissues. While a prescribed mouthwash is provided to aid healing, it is not a substitute for proper brushing. Additionally, a soft diet is recommended for the first week post-surgery to promote optimal healing.

Implant integration with the bone typically occurs over three months. Approximately 11 weeks after surgery, you will return for a clearance appointment, where the implant will be assessed both clinically and radiographically. A 3D CBCT scan will be taken to evaluate bone levels, and a Periotest™ will be performed to measure implant stability. Should any concerns arise, they will be addressed promptly at no additional cost.

Understanding the Risks and Success Rates

Dental implant surgery has a high success rate, with approximately 98% of implants integrating successfully. However, in approximately 2% of cases, full bone integration does not occur, necessitating removal and replacement of the implant. In such cases, additional healing time of up to three months may be required before reattempting placement.

Other potential risks, though rare, include bleeding, infection, or nerve-related complications that may result in temporary or, in very rare cases, permanent numbness in the lip or chin area. Certain factors - such as smoking, poor nutrition, medical conditions affecting wound healing, and medications that impact bone turnover - can influence the likelihood of success and may extend healing times. Prior to treatment, a comprehensive medical history will be taken, and these considerations will be discussed in detail.

Our team has extensive experience in managing complex implant cases, including patients with significant bone and soft tissue deficiencies and those with underlying medical conditions. We have successfully treated many patients who were previously advised that dental implants were not an option.

Dental implant surgery can be performed under local anaesthesia (awake) or general anaesthesia (asleep), depending on individual needs. Most procedures take place at the Sydney Surgical Centre in Randwick, ensuring a comfortable and controlled surgical environment.
